Water Softener System – Detailed Guide

A water softener is a product that removes the mineral from the water that creates hardness. Hard water is one of the most common problems related to water, but with the water softener system, this problem can be solved.

Hard water can cause various types of problems like it leaves soap scum across the bathroom and kitchen, dry your skin and hair, and damage various appliances. So using a water softener is the best solution for these problems.

Moreover, water softener saves your time, energy, money, and protects your property.

In this article, we will discuss the component of water softener, types of water softener and how to install the water softener system.

Components of Water Softener Systems

There are three main components of the water softener.

  1. Mineral Tank
  2. Control Valve
  3. Brine Tank

All these three components work simultaneously to remove the minerals from hard water. Below we have discussed all these components in detail.

Mineral Tank

It is a chamber where the hard water is softened. When water is supply to this tank, the water seeps through the beads of resin beads and deposit the calcium and magnesium ion. Then water exits the tank and flows to your household appliances through the pipes.

Control Valve

Control value measures the amount of water passing through the mineral tank. Moreover, it also tracks the volume of water at the time of entering and leaving the tank.

When hard water flows through the mineral tank, resin bead exchange their sodium ion with hard water. So over time, it decreases the capacity of resins to soften the hard water.

Before the beads become dead to do this process, the control valve automatically starts the regeneration cycle. Moreover, the maximum capacity of the control valve depends on a certain factor, like the size of your house and the hardness of the water.

Brine Tank

The brine tank helps in the regeneration process of water softening. Moreover, it is a small tank that fits adjacent to the mineral tank. Brine tank contains a highly concentrated solution of salt to restore the resin beads.

The salt is manually added to the brine tank in the form of a block or pellets. This salt dissolves in water at the bottom of the tank, and when the control valve indicates that beads are diminishing, the salt solution is taken out from the tank and sends to the mineral tank.

Types of Water Softener

There are three main types of water softener systems , but the most commonly used type is ion-exchange or cation exchange. Below we have discussed all these types in detail.

Salt-Based Ion Exchange Softener

In this softener, two tanks are present one contains the special resin beads, and the other contains the brine solution. Moreover, it works on the principle of ion exchange.

It softens the hard water by substituting sodium for hard minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium.

Salt-Free Water Softener

This softener regenerates with potassium chloride salt instead of sodium. Moreover, it is suitable for those people who are concern about salt intake.

Actually it is not a water softener it is a descaler . It does not reduce the hard water minerals, but it protects the mineral from being deposited on the surface of the water. The softening of water through this softener is not much effective as compared to the ion exchange softener.

Dual Tank Water Softener

When a water softener is recharging, it disconnects from the water system. This is the reason why the regeneration process mainly occurs at night.

But if we require soft water at the time of the regeneration process, then it will be difficult for us to do that, and to solve this problem, we use a dual tank water softener.

In this softener, two tanks are used. When one is using for the softening process, the other tank is regenerating. So with the help of dual tanks , there is a continuous supply of soft water.

How to Install Water Softener

Installing a water softener is not a complicated process. You only need to follow the below seven steps to install the water softener.
