Frequently Asked Questions about Propane

  • What is propane gas? How safe is it as a domestic fuel?

Propane is formed as a by-product during the distillation process of crude oil. It is also a side product extracted during the processing of natural liquid gas and other liquid gasses. Propane rates high on the safety scale as it is non-toxic, environmentally friendly and more affordable than its other fuel counterparts. The fuel is also comparatively less flammable hence making it a near perfect domestic fuel.

  • How do I get started and make the transition to propane to save on my monthly power bills?

S.J Johnson makes the transition easy, hassle free and convenient as per your requirements. Calling our number will get you in touch with our customer service staff that would provide free estimates for you requirements. Call us at 410-257-2515.

  • How do I place an order for propane to be delivered?

We give our customers multiple options to be able to place an order for propane delivery in Southern Maryland. You can either order online or download the delivery form and fax us. An even more convenient option would be to sign up for automatic delivery where you are given top delivery priority, and will receive the delivery automatically without having to call for a request.

  • What option do I have if I am unavailable at home to receive the delivery?

We have developed some policies which will enable delivery in your absence. We have a pre-payment option, which adds credit to your account, and enables you to place the order. This does not require your presence for payment after delivery.

Automatic delivery enables you to automatically receive a delivery without contacting our office while all deliveries will be billed to a credit card on file.

Or you can place an order at any time you find you need propane and bill it to your credit card.

We try to make it as easy as possible to fill our customers' needs.

  • What makes propane an environmental friendly gas?

Propane is renewable, sustainable for the future and cleaner than other forms of fuel like diesel. Using propane will significantly reduce carbon emissions released in the atmosphere. Propane does not harm the ozone layer as it does not contain HFC (hydro chlorofluorocarbon) or CFC (chlorofluorocarbons.)

  • How will I detect a gas leak?

If you suspect you have a leak, leave the house IMMEDIATELY and call 911.

Propane inherently is odorless and colorless. So to give it a characteristic smell, ethyl mercaptan is added to give it a recognizable odor.

If you smell an odor similar to that of rotten eggs, contact SJ Johnson so we can perform a leak check to ensure you have no leaks.

  • What should be done if a gas leak is detected?

Leave the house IMMEDIATELY and call 911.

  • How do I choose a propane supplying company?

Always look for a company (such as S.J Johnson), which has a good reputation, and safety record. Regulatory Agencies should be able to provide information about them. Always check whether the company is registered with NPGA and SPGA.
